good morning, it's been a very busy overnight. it's friday, april 19. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 4:30. one of the suspects in the boston marathon bombings was killed by police overnight. he is identified as a 19-year- old from cambridge, massachusetts. >> and there is now a massive manhunt now for the second suspect in a boston suburb not far from cambridge, watertown. the latest photo of the dead suspect came from a convenience store in cambridge. the boston police commissioner says they believe to a cbs news has confirmed the suspects are brothers from a region of russia near chechnya. the suspect was killed early this morning in a shootout with poliin the suburb of watertown. police say the suspects threw explosives from their car as they led police on a chase into watertown from cambridge. now, earlier, they are believed to have ambushed and killed a police officer on the m.i.t. campus and then staged a carjacking. that happened hours after the

fbi released photos of the two suspects yesterday. we have more now from cbs reporter susan mcginnis in boston. reporter: explosions and gunshots pierced the early- morning hours as police closed in on the suspects in the boston marathon bombings. officers are going door to door looking for one of the men who they say opened fire on them early this morning. >> we are asking you to stay indoors, to stay in your homes, for the time being. >> reporter: police say this man, the man identified as suspect number 2 in the boston marathon bombings is still on the loose. >> we believe this to be a terrorist. we believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. >> reporter: suspect number one the man in the black hat is now reportedly dead from multiple gunshot wounds and possibly even blast wounds. >> the officer has been shot. >> reporter: the events began late thursday night when two men allegedly shot and killed

th then reportedlystole car at gunpoint and headed to watertown. that's where police caught up with them and the gunfight ensued. the suspects reportedly used other weapons against the cops during the chase. >> during the course of that pursuit, several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police officers. >> reporter: a transportation police officer was hit during the gunfight and is at the hospital in critical condition. susan mcginnis, cbs news, boston. >> and here's another look at the suspect in the boston bombings and crime wave last night. the man in the white hat is still at large. more than 380,000 people in watertown are told to stay indoors right now. mass transit has been shut down and the hospitals are locked down, as well. we are going to have a live update from boston with susan mcginnis in just a couple of minutes. the martinez boy who was wounded in the boston bombings could get out of the intensive care unit today.

11-year-old aaron hern had a visit from first lady michelle obama yesterday. she gave him some stuffed toys and a medal from the president. the 6th grader is recovering from a severe shrapnel wound to the leg. it's not clear how much longer he will be in the hospital. even those who made it out of the boston blast zone unhurt will always carry the scar of what they saw that day especially those who ran toward the danger to help. tracy monroe recalls kneeling whose g blown of i tried to hol hand and just rub her face and i said, hi, baby. look up at me. look in my eyes, come on, it's going to be okay. what's your name? what's your name? she just looked up at me and said, "jane." i'll never forget it. >> so sad there. jane is recovering, but monroe learned the little girl was the sister of 8-year-old martin richard who died in the attack. >> it's been quite a week out there, that's for sure.

>> it has. 4:33 let's get back to the bay area and let's check our traffic and weather. it looks like it's going to be one terrific weekend, huh, brian? >> it does. it looks like things are warming up. it's a lousy day for news. good to see you nevertheless, after a while. >> you, too. >> thanks for coming by channel 5 this morning. we are starting out with mostly clear skies and fog at the shore. and a little bit of a nip in the air but, of course, at this hour, what do you expect? transamerica pyramid, numbers today in the 40s and a few 50s in the early going. 50 concord. 53 oakland. livermore 49. 45 degrees in santa rosa. 52 in san jose. and as we look at the satellite picture you can see a few high clouds beginning to sneak into northern california. the effects of which will be nearly nil, maybe a few high clouds later this afternoon. and a few low clouds pulling into the shoreline maybe midday. but the bottom line is we are going to get low clouds a lot shore to cool things at th coast, but it is not going to c we are still going to be plenty warm with 82 at concord, jose,

fairfield, as . in the city, we are ju in the mid-60s though so the closer you get to the coast, the cooler you will get. cooler than yesterday. we'll have the extended forecast. it looks warm. but first the all-important traffic update. good morning. 4:35 this morning, fortunately no big hot spots, nothing unusual. quiet towards the bay bridge, the usual overnight roadwork. i saw crews leaving the scene approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. there may have been a couple of lanes blocked overnight but they are opening things up right about now so easy ride getting into san francisco. live look at the south bay, 101 near trimble, northbound and southbound 101 both moving at the limit. by the way, 280 in san jose looks good, as well. let's go over to the nimitz now. checking the east bay roadways, 880 northbound approaching 66 there is some overnight roadwork. caltrans should be leaving the scene by about 5:00 this morning. another 25 minutes or so. and golden gate bridge right

around now they should be re- opening some more southbound lanes of traffic but overall things are quiet heading out of marin. that's our first check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. 4:36. our breaking news coverage. boston marathon bombings continues now. one of the suspects was killed by police overnight. and now a massive manhunt for the second suspect continues right now. the latest photo of the dead suspect came from a convenience store in cambridge. he is a 19-year-old from mbchusetts. the boston police commissioner says they believe him to be a terrorist. cbs reporter susan mcginnis is in boston with the very latest. and a lot has happened in the last 24 hours, susan. give us an update. what is the very latest on trying to catch that second suspect now? >> reporter: it's been quite incredible, frank, the way this story has unfolded overnight. we have a massive manhunt going on in watertown, massachusetts. it's about 10 miles west of

downtown boston right now dozens and dozens of police, s.w.a.t. teams, national guard are combing watertown looking for this second suspect. we know him from the video the fbi released yesterday as the man in the white cap that wore has cap backward who dropped the back at the site of the second bombing. he is the one who is still on the loose. he is at large considered extremely dangerous and this is why the governor has ordered all mass transit here shut down. >> susan, it boggles my mind -- i spent a lot of years in boston, and when you think about where the bombings were on boylston street, you go across a bridge, across the charles, and you're at m.i.t. and lo and behold, that's where they found these guys, literally a half mile from the bombing site. >> reporter: yeah. i mean, it all happened -- it's all happening very close to here and, you know, the bombs went off right here. we are still seeing high security here in downtown boston. the developments overnight were really quite spectacular from a

rd am.i.t. a carjacking after a robbery at 7-eleven and then to this gunfire in watertown it's really been quite amazing. >> we understand they have shut down transit, the t, i guess, that goes throug watertown. if this suspect is there, there is no way he can jump on that. was he still in a car when he got away? do we know how he got away? sounds like they had him pinned in pretty well. >> reporter: we don't know at this point. but we know, you know, that police do think that he could still be in the area and so that's why they are going door to door. we know that earlier in the evening, a car was hijacked and one report said that they actually held the carjack victim in the car for about half an hour and that explosives were thrown from that car. the suspect who died ended up dying of multiple gunshot wounds and cardiac arrest and also explosive wounds so that

[ explosion ] >> huge flames could be seen in the distance prior to that large blast on wednesday night. this video was shot by a college student who was not injured. the explosion in the farm town of west demolished dozens of homes and buildings but it's not clear how many people were killed in the small community of 2800. early estimates put the number of dead at high as 15, then authorities backed away from any numbers.

last night, west mayor tommy musca estimated 35 to 40 people were killed in the blast. and more than 160 people have been treated for injuries. destruction can be seen for several blocks around the explosion site. >> some of my closest friends have had their whole houses destroyed and i just -- we're going to try to pull together and recover from this. i mean, that's all we can do. >> rescuers continue to search the rubble of houses and apartments near the explosion site hanging on to hope that survivors can be found. some experts say the explosion shook the ground with the strength of a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. investigators say it appears to be the result of an industrial accident. 4:40 on this friday. coming up, shots fired in oakland overnight. why this time, though, police planned it. >> plus a peek into the past. we have a first look at the towering future of san francisco. >> and a big smelly problem. why trash collection has suddenly stopped in some bay area cities. stay with us. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

officer dead... as well as a suspect in the boston maratn bombings. back to this morning's breaking story, a wild night in massachusetts left a police officer dead as well as a suspect in the boston marathon bombings. for the latest, let's go to anne makovec in the newsroom. anne. >> reporter: the man who was killed is identified as a is the-year-old man -- 19-year-old man from cambridge, massachusetts, a russian who carried out the boston bombing attack with his brother, who is still on the loose. the latest photo of one of the suspects came from a convenience store in cambridge. police say he tried to rob the store. now, we understand that this is one of the brothers still on the loose. the boston commissioner say they believe him to be a terrorist. the man in this next photo on the white -- in the white hat is the one that is still at large. his brother is the one -- the one on the left is the one who has been killed. the suspect was killed earlier this morning in a shootout with

police. that happened in the suburb of watertown. the confrontation started around 10:00 last night boston time when police say one of the suspects killed a police officer on the m.i.t. campus, then staged a carjacking. police say the suspects threw explosives from their car as they led police on a chase into watertown and this all happened hours after the fbi released these photos of the two suspects. people in boston -- 7 neighborhoods in the area are on lockdown. >> i was playing videogame. i take it off and i hear rapid fire and i was like, i got to go check that out. you know, i just walked down the street, didn't even put any shoes on. i was like, you know, expecting to be down the street for two minutes and then the whole crime scene is pushed back further and now i'm kept from going home. >> reporter: at least a quarter of a million people living in boston suburbs are being told to stay home right now. all mass transit is shut down and businesses are being asked the "aociated pres as

coming from the chechnya region in russia and living in the u.s. for a year. >> we'll have a live report from boston at 5 a.m. >> what a night in boston. >> no kidding. 4:45. we have a weekend approaching and we need to know what the weather is going to be like. >> have to get you caught up today on this friday. the most important forecast of the week, what are we going to be doing with the weekend? sweating it out for the most part. we have numbers that are warming into the low 80s inland. it will moderate a little bit along the shoreline as we have this little disturbance coming down from the pacific northwest. for them it means rain, for us it means maybe a few low clouds along the shoreline. that's why we're saying mostly clear at the coast. a puff or two of fog out there, not bad. clear start elsewhere, temperatures in the low 50s as you head out the door and mid- 40s inland. so bundle up a bit as you head out. but then it will warm up nicely. this afternoon, a few high clouds will be floating in from this thing that i'll show you in a minute but we'll stay cool at the coast.

we'll still be a little bit warmer inland. so it's -- depends where you are today as per usual in the bay area. high pressure is holding fast over the eastern pacific. but you can see that up in the pacific northwest, this low is going to be causing rain for washington and for a little bit of oregon and maybe over the top of the ridge we'll get a few high clouds this afternoon. but all in all we'll stay dry. no rain in sight for us. slightly warmer temperatures. out of the bay area, low 80s for the great valley, 78 redding, drizzle in eureka and 79 degrees and partly cloudy skies. not bad. 71 degrees at yosemite. good day to have a look at half dome. down to the south bay the numbers a little warmer than yesterday. 80 in santa clara. today prepare for 81 in san jose. 73 at hayward. out in the far east low pressure for the -- low 80s for brentwood and 82 at antioch, 81 fairfield, and beautiful day for the north bay today, mid-

to upper 70s. 65 in the city and 72 in oakland. look ahead, a few clouds float in from time to time, a few low clouds return to the shoreline so the beaches moderate, inland remains warm, we'll warm it up still beginning next week and mid-80s monday through thursday. there's weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> that's a great looking forecast. thank you, brian. fortunately outside on this friday morning, everything is pretty quiet on a lot of bay area roadways. overnight roadwork right now. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge where the drive time is still a very easy 14- minute commute out of hayward heading towards foster city. over at the bay bridge, i think they just wrapped up some overnight roadwork approaching the toll plaza. so once you get on the incline section and the upper deck everything looks great. this is a look at the "s" curve traffic heading towards treasure island still nice and light as we come closer to 5:00 this morning. elsewhere, southbound 880 there is some overnight roadwork approaching brokaw. here's a live look for the

silicon valley commute. if you are traveling 237, everything looks good. excuse me. out towards -- out towards sunnyvale. and westbound 580 coming through the altamont pass, one of our usual spots to slow down, the westbound 580 ride was a mess yesterday after an earlier accident. fortunately everything is looking good at this hour heading towards pleasanton. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. the garbage strike from two weeks ago is back and this time it is expanded to other bay area cities. santa clara, milpitas and san jose are now among the list of cities where service is disrupted. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is live in fremont where frustrations are piling up. >> reporter: michelle, frustrations and trash. that's for sure. fremont is one of the cities that's been suffering the worst. now, this is the second time in a month trash will be sitting out a little bit longer. these piles and piles of trash at tens of thousands of fremont homes are sittg still because

of a garbage strike. the first time bay area trash workers were striking in solidarity with workers in youngstown, ohio. thisime, work forces with others in tennessee. it's part of a so-called sympathy strike. but fremont neighbors are not so sympathetic to their cae. >> it would make more sense, a lot more sense you know, if they were striking here for something here. but if they are doing it for someplace else, they shouldn't be. >> reporter: as we mentioned, it's affected several bay area cities but fremont has seen the worst of it. garbage has been sitting out at least 45,000 homes and businesses. now, coming up in the next half hour, we'll hear from the city's mayor and how he is trying to get things back on track. reporting live in fremont, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> all right, cate, thank you. leave your cans out today. crews will work extra shifts to take away the garbage by the

end of the weekend. a 16-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a bay area paramedic is expected in court today. christian burton is supposed to enter a plea for killing quinn boyer. the paramedic was shot in the head while driving through the oakland hills earlier this month. investigators say burton pulled the trigger but five other teens one as young as 13 were all involved in the crime. burton is charged as an adult. gunfire heard in oakland last night is no reason for alarm. just part of a test. [ gunshots ] >> the oakland police department is testing shotspotter technology used to detect gunfire and pinpoint the location. >> now with this technology we can actually tell exactly where a person got shot within five meters of the gunshots going off. additionally, with these alerts, we are going to be getting these actual gunshot alerts within 45 seconds where viewed by shotspotter and pushed out to the police cars where they get a map of the

location, the number of shots, listen to the gunshots as they respond for tactical purposes. >> the technology also alerts police to shootings when no one calls 911. you can check out one of san francisco's landmark buildings from a new point of view. a visitors center just opened up inside the transamerica pyramid complete with a gift shop. for over a decade, tourists have to look at it from the outside. it was built in the '60s. the building with its unique shape has a controversial past, though. now an iconic status. these displays tell the story. >> transamerica was a bunch of young turks looking for purpose. >> the acquisition of that particular corner was quite an adventure. it was very, very complicated. >> the visitors center is open to the public monday through friday. time now 4:51. ready for take-off? the faa nears a decision on the

morning. we'll have more traffic and weather together coming up every 10 minutes. 4:55. the faa could move as soon as today to end its three-month grounding of the boeing 787 the dreamliner jets. flights involving the new passenger planes were halted you may recall back in january after two incidents involving lithium ion batteries that smoldered and emitted fumes. boeing has made changes to the battery and its casings to prevent future problems. no word when the all nippon airways might resume flights between san jose and tokyo. can airline passengers -- airline passengers can begin delays on sunday when federal furloughs start to affect air traffic controllers. delays could be up to three hours at the nation's biggest airports including those serving l.a., chicago, atlanta and new york. they will likely be a domino effect obviously at other airports. transportation secretary ray

lahood says controller staffing has to be reduced by 10% reducing the number of planes airports can handle. wall street is looking for a positive end to the week after losses in the last session. stocks fell as the number of companies issued weak earnings reports. the dow was down 81 yesterday. the nasdaq was down 38. and google is one company that beat wall street expectations. the number one search engine earned $3.3 billion with advertising ving from personal computers to mobile devices. google's quarterly profits 16% from a year ago. and more than 200,000 honda minivans and suvs are being recalled in the united states and canada due to a transmission problem. we are getting word that cbs will have a special report.

governor patrick is scheduled to speak probably informing us what he knows going on at this moment and what they have uncovered from the information so far. john mill and bill bratton are here. update us in terms of what we know at this moment. >> what we is that the events last night, which start with the assassination and murder of an m.i.t. police officer a robbery at a gas station, a wild car chase including bombs being thrown during the chase from out the windows of the suspects' vehicle, that ended in watertown with a shootout using that vehicle for cover, throwing more explosive devices. one suspect killed in that shootout. another officer at that scene severely wounded. and the suspect who gets away jumps in a

siblocks and then hops out on the run. so that 20-block perimeter is a place where they have told lock your doors. don't answer for anybody but the police. and they say that they're the police, make sure you can tell it's the real police andhat is the tense situation folding moments ago, inhat neighborhood, at an address ev the suspects, a woman was taken out in police custody. this could be a relative, a girlfriend, a mother, a wife, and she is probably being brought in at this stage as a material witness. the courthouse has been surrounded by police and federal protective service people. we don't know if that's in response to a threat or just to lock it down and make sure it's not a target. >> it's an interesting time -- world we live in today with social media because people now that they have been identified ascending photographs from facebook.

basics that suspect one is dead. suspect two is on the run. we have an mbta officer who was seriously wounded and is in surgery right now. we have an m.i.t. security officer who has been killed. there is a massive manhunt under way. a lot of law enforcement involved in that. to something that, we have suspended all service on the mbta our public transit service until we think it's safe to open all or some of that. we're asking people to shelter in place. in other words, to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open the door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer and that applies here in watertown where we are right now. also, cambridge, waltham, newton, belmont, and
